Habits in golf

Did you know that habits are permanent?

Each time you make a movement, your body adds a protein (the myelin) around the axon (cell root) of all nerve cells involved. This protein enhances the nervous impulse. This, in turn, makes the same movement that much easier the next time. Over time, your body can add up to 300 layers of myelin this way. These myelin layers are permanent, hence the habits, unless one suffers from a degenerative disease, such as multiple sclerosis. This leads us to the following: A repeated golf movement becomes a habit, and a bad habit will bug you unless you have it cured.

The bad news

Most golfers practice without being looked after by a qualified coach. Therefore, I can assure you that they all develop several bad habits, which lead to other compensatory bad ones. I notice it every time I look at golfers in a driving range. The more they practice, the more they ingrain new bad habits. As a result, they develop multiple swing faults. Watching that catch-22, I suffer as much as they do! When years after they finally ask me for help, I must tell them the bad news about swing faults: They die hard.

The good news

You can bypass bad habits in golf by creating good ones. For example, topping the ball can be cured. This is no easy task, to say the least, as new habits must be stronger that old ones before having any impact on the golf course. You cannot overcome bad habits without a qualified coach, even if you know all possible drills. Only a good coach can make a reliable swing analysis and prescribe you the proper drills to repeat over and over again to correct your swing faults and guide you through your swing change process.

Conclusion

To save time, money and unnecessary hardship, call on a golf teacher. The sooner, the better.
